Starting a New Chapter Far From Home

Hello everyone! Welcome! <3

Introducing Myself

My full name is Alexandra Milagros Aviles Bohorquez, but since it is quite long, I usually prefer to be called Ale. I was born in Peru and I arrived in the United States a year and a half ago. Before moving to Las Vegas, I had already started my university studies in Peru, since high school is completed at an earlier age there. However, my father encouraged me to continue my education in the United States in order to have better academic and professional opportunities. I’m a full-time student at CSN (College of Southern Nevada), enrolled in the Associate in Business program and I want to develop my professional career in the field of Logistics. My main goal is to successfully complete my current degree as soon as possible to later afford my second degree in Law at UNLV which I decided to postpone because I knew that if I didn’t fully mastering English, I wouldn’t be able to complete the program due to a lack of technical vocabulary.

In terms of personality, I would describe myself as someone who always tries to make a good impression on others; therefore, I act with respect and good manners while maintaining a positive attitude toward those around me. Academically, I’m a student who learns step by step and at a calm pace. Being curious helps me explore and research many topics. I’m always willing to learn and improve and even when something seems difficult at first, I try to avoid frustration.

My First Impression of IS101

My first impression of the IS101 course has been very positive. I entered the course without much knowledge of Microsoft programs, beyond the basics that most people know, but I have always wanted to gain a stronger command of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, so I am very motivated to pass this course. At the beginning, I was honestly very nervous because not fully mastering English makes it difficult to express myself correctly. However, thanks to the support provided by Professor Wu, the language barrier has become a much smaller issue.

IS101 has helped me understand information systems concepts, improve my organization, and see myself as more professional. My experience at CSN so far has been very positive, and I am grateful to continue meeting kind professors who are genuinely enthusiastic about helping their students achieve their goals.

Discussion 2 Part 2 - LabSim Skill 2.1.10 Printer Facts

For Discussion 2 Part 2, I chose the skill 2.1.10 Printer Facts – What type of printer you need? in LabSim. Through the video and the labs, help me understand that choosing a printer is not just about using or purchase any kind of printer, but rather about considering important factors such as size, speed, cost, print quality and printing capacity. I also learned about the differences between inkjet and laser printers, as well as their advantages and disadvantages depending on their intended use. This skill was useful because I can now determine the type of printer that I have at home and it will allow me to make better decisions when purchasing or evaluating printers, things that are not commonly known.

Something I Would Like to Share

Finally, something I would like to share is that I am grateful to God for the opportunity to study, as this course is part of an important process in my academic life. Although this process can be frustrating due to the language barrier that limits my ability to speak in class and express myself as I would like, and also emotionally difficult because I miss my family in Peru, I remain motivated to continue moving forward and improving. I am often reminded that every effort has its reward, and I hope this is true for all my classmates and for myself.

Thank you to anyone who took the time to read my post <3.

  1. I'm very glad to hear my support has made the language barrier a much smaller issue and your experience at CSN so far has been very positive :-)

You may miss your family in Peru but you are not completely alone! One of your classmates is also from Peru. Another one is also aiming for a degree in Paralegal/Law.

With your positive attitude, calm pace, and innate curiosity, you will succeed in IS101-3003, Spring 2026 ^_^

  2. Hello, Alexandra, I really respect that you moved here and decided to keep going with school even with the language barrier. I can relate to that more than you think because English is not my first language either, and there are so many ideas I want to say in class but I end up staying quiet. Sometimes I hold back because I am worried I will say something the wrong way or just sound awkward. It is frustrating when you know what you mean in your head but it does not come out the same in English.

I also think it was smart that you chose to focus on business first before law so you can build your confidence with the language. That shows you are thinking long term and not just rushing into things.

Your printer topic was actually practical too because most people just buy whatever is cheap without thinking about inkjet versus laser. Being far from family while studying is not easy, but the fact that you are still showing up and pushing through says a lot about you.

  3. Hi Ale, it was very nice to read about your story and your journey coming from Peru. I’m also in the Business program at CSN, and I plan to transfer to UNLV in the future as well. I also want to encourage you not to be afraid of your English or to speak up in class. It’s not our first language, and the best way to improve is by practicing and making the most of every opportunity to learn. I also liked the topic you chose about printer facts, because many people don’t realize that choosing a printer depends on things like cost, quality, and how it will be used. I really admire your motivation to continue learning and improving, and I’m sure that determination will help you reach your goals.

  4. Another positive thing to keep in mind since now you are in Las Vegas is this city is a hotpot of different cultures from all over the world. It is not a surprise if people go through culture shocks and cannot be expressive with the English language and I completely understand that. This blog post is a proof that you can express yourself clearly and more power to that! God bless, hope to seeing more of your blogs and what a cute little doggie you have as a background!

  5. Hello Ale! The picture in your background is adorable. It's really admirable that despite the barrier of language, you still want to pursue law. Fun fact, I was actually going to choose 2.1.10 Printer Facts, but then I saw it was taken. I like printing photos and art so learning about different printers was interesting! The printers all come with their own advantages and disadvantages, and which one someone chooses depends on their own circumstances. I wish you the best in your schooling!

  6. Hi Ale, I completely understand how you feel. I’m also from Peru, and the language barrier is something I’m gradually improving on too. I try to encourage myself every day, and I’m also in the Associate in Business program. Don’t worry too much about the language, little by little we’ll get better. As we say in Peru, “El que persevera, alcanza” (Those who persevere achieve their goals).

  7. Hi Ale. I am glad that you are willing to continue your education. What got you into studying logistics?

  8. Hey Ale, Thanks for sharing about your journey from Peru to the U.S. It takes a lot of determination to continue your education in a new country while also working on improving your English. Your plan to finish your business degree and eventually study law sounds like a really strong goal, and it’s clear you’re taking the right steps to get there.

I also thought the part about the printer lesson was interesting. Most people don’t really think about the differences between inkjet and laser printers until they actually need one. Understanding things like cost, speed, and print quality can definitely help when choosing the right printer. It also sounds like you have a really positive mindset about school, which will help a lot as you continue your studies.

  9. Ale, your journey from Peru to the Associate in Business program at CSN highlights an impressive level of strategic patience, as you have thoughtfully prioritized mastering English and Information Systems—specifically technical hardware evaluations like printer specifications—as essential precursors to your long-term goal of studying Law at UNLV.

  10. Hello Ale, respect to you as a Law degree is nothing to sniff at, on top of that it won't even be your first degree. The way you describe yourself as a human is a great mindset although simple it truly is rare for others to act just as that. Something all the world could use a little bit more of, it's great to see you find a way to stay motivated even with language barrier it just speaks of your determination. God Bless! Love the dog in the photo by the way :)

  11. Hi Alexandra, I hope school is good to you and that you're taking your learning and assignments at your own pace. I wish I had your capacity to avoid being frustrated but I feel that I have to work through frustration to understand at the end and see the issue through. About printers, I haven't had any thought to when I would need a certain kind of printer but all I cared about was if the printer works and if it has ink, hoping it prints right. Your way of explaining when and what to consider when using certain kinds of printers are helpful. Family lives on with you even when they're not present, I hope you know that they miss you just as much! Keep tackling anything that comes and you'll be unstoppable.

  12. Hello Ale, learning another language is definitely difficult to say the least, especially with so many other responsibilities on your plate. I'm impressed that you're not just going to complete 2 degrees but you're also going to pursue law. You can do it and good luck on your journey!

  13. Hi Ale, moving to a new country and continuing your education takes a lot of effort and determination. I also liked how you explained what you learned about different types of printers and how that knowledge can help when choosing one in the future.

  14. Hey Ale, we have quite a similar experience! I also had to move here to Vegas from a different country around 3 years ago. It's inspiring to see how much determination you have! And it's also impressive that you finished high school + started college at an earlier age, I wish I could've done that but I didn't have the opportunity to haha :') I also admire how focused you are on your goals and do whatever you can for you to achieve them. Keep it up and I'm sure you'd be successful in no time!

  15. Hi Ale, reading your post was very inspiring to me, especially when it came to the language barrier, missing family, and not knowing much about Microsoft programs. I truly believe you can achieve all the goals you are willing to pursue. Also, this class is very useful, especially when you are going for a career in business, logistics, and law. I wish you the best and hope you become successful in your journey through school!
